The Paris Agreements calls for Parties to achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century – a goal widely referred to as “net zero”.
The Paris Agreement does not define a particular pre-industrial period but is said to represent the earliest period when global observations of land and sea temperatures became available and is generally accepted as before 1750.
According to a Global Energy Monitor report in April 2024, coal power capacity grew 2% in 2023, with China driving two-thirds of this.
